Six Countries, Six Number Ones: How to Read a National Chart

Apple Music publishes a chart per country, and there is no official global chart. Comparing six markets on the same day is therefore the only way to understand what a number-one position actually measures. On 26 July 2026, the United States, France, Germany, Brazil, Japan and South Korea display six different number ones. This guide explains what to look at in each before drawing any conclusion.
United States: Check the Release Date

Been By Now was released on 24 July and holds first place two days later. In a market of that size, such speed measures catalogue power rather than perceived quality: Morgan Wallen places three tracks in the top eleven. In the United States, first place almost always rewards an already-established artist, never a discovery.
France: Check the Age of the Track

France’s number one was released on 21 November 2025, more than eight months before this snapshot. A chart whose summit is held by a track that old indicates a slow market, one that settles songs rather than consuming them. The rest of the top confirms the reading: three of the ten leading tracks date from 2025.
Germany: Check Where the Artists Come From

Germany is the only one of the six countries studied to place a fully international track at the top. Dai Dai pairs a Colombian artist with a Nigerian one, and the same song ranks fourth in France. The German market absorbs continental hits unusually fast while keeping local rap across the rest of its top, making it the most mixed chart in this snapshot.
Brazil: Count Artists, Not Titles

Brazil is the most spectacular case in this snapshot: the top six places are held by six different songs, all credited to Anitta, all from the same project released on 24 July. This phenomenon, common after an album release, temporarily saturates the chart and hides the rest of the market. A top ten dominated by one artist does not describe a country’s taste, it describes a release schedule.
Japan: Look at the Weight of the Catalogue

Brand New, released on 13 July, is number one, but the band also places ライラック, from 2024, at number two and 青と夏, from 2018, at number six. Japan is the only market in this snapshot where an eight-year-old track sits beside a new release in the same top ten. No foreign title appears in the top six.
South Korea: Look at the Single Genre

REDRED has been number one since its 20 April release, and the five tracks behind it all belong to the same category, K-Pop. It is the most homogeneous chart of the six, with zero foreign entries near the top. Reading a Korean chart therefore means watching an internal competition between groups, not a competition between genres.
Four habits make any national chart readable. First, count names rather than titles: Brazil shows six different songs at the top but only one artist, which describes a completely different situation from a top six shared between six names. Second, look at release dates: a first place achieved in two days, as in the United States, is not comparable to one held for eight months, as in France. Third, check the language: Japan and Korea are the most closed markets in this snapshot, with no foreign track at the top, while Germany puts a Colombian-Nigerian duo at number one. Finally, watch out for album releases, which temporarily flood a chart with tracks. Used together, these four filters prevent the most common and most mistaken conclusion: that a number one means the same thing everywhere. In reality, in some countries it rewards an artist, in others a song, and in a few simply a well-chosen release date.
